Colloidal Silver

Silver is a Natural Remedy found to be most beneficial for our health and living environment. It is widely used, not only to fight infections and inflammation, but also to disinfect and preserve.

Its greatest advantage is that it provides us with a relatively safe but inexpensive and powerful antibiotic which is readily available in many countries.

Where it is not readily available, simple to use C.S. making machines are available from the Internet.

In its Ionic (electrically charged) form silver helps to boost our immune system and gives us natural protection against bacteria and viruses.

NOTE :-
I find the term "Colloidal" is sometimes rather loosely used to describe a wide range of sometimes very dubious products.

My definition of Colloidal, or Ionic Silver is : chemically pure (not tap) water into which a concentration of from 5 Parts Per Million to 10 PPM., and definitely less that 15 PPM. of silver ions has been dispersed using an electrolytic process whilst agitating the water.

Anything else I would avoid. The 'more is better' brigade have done great harm to the cause of colloidal silver by marketing variations approaching toxic concentrations.

Silver in the colloidal state, is claimed to kill 650 different kinds of pathogens, including bacteria, fungus and viruses.

It safely does so in minutes, with no side effects and no resistant strains, as with antibiotics. Humans (and animals) absorb ionic colloidal silver rapidly. It is absorbed into the blood before it can reach the gut (antibiotics absorb so slowly that they travel to your intestines, killing many of your normally beneficial bacteria).

The risks associated with silver use pale in comparison to the dangers presented by some modern drugs. Side effects are extraordinarily rare, and threshold limits to avoid any type of silver toxicity have been well established by the American EPA.

Ionic Silver has long been used in allopathic medicine and in water purification processes.

N.A.S.A. is said to use silver in the space shuttle to avoid having to use chlorine in the drinking supplies.

Some hospitals in Europe utilize silver-coated catheters to help prevent the occurrence of opportunistic infections.

Silver nitrate was widely used in the eyes of newborns to prevent a blinding infection that was once commonplace.

Ionic silver has long been used in hospitals to prevent the spread of legionnaires disease in the hospital water supply and air conditioning units.

Remember, if you produce Ionic Silver as a medicine, then it follows that you implement the highest standards of hygiene and control.

In is most basic form an apparatus for making Ionic Silver is laughably simple. A 9 volt battery is connected to two silver wires which are immersed in water and Ionic silver will be produced by the electrolytic action, however, as pure water is an insulator, you could be in for a long wait.

It is vital that the water used is as pure as possible. Tap water contains salts and chlorine, which will result in silver chloride being produced as well as some ionic silver. This also applies to filtered and bottled water products.

De-mineralized water is more pure but not always pure enough. However, it is often the purest water available unless you produce and test your own distilled water.

Ideally you should use only pure distilled water for colloidal silver production, but beware of “Distilled Water” which claims to have 5 PPM. or less dissolved solids. This is ten times the ideal level of dissolved solids.

Always use silver which is at least 99.9 percent pure. Do not use sterling silver, as used for jewelery making. Sterling silver contains metals other then silver.

Pure water is an insulator, it is the impurities in water which make it a conductor of electricity. However as even distilled water is not absolutely pure, some current will flow between electrodes placed in water connected to a moderate voltage.

As current flows, silver ions gradually enter the water making it more conductive, and so the electrolysis process starts.

With the buildup of silver ions, the water becomes even more conductive and the process speeds up. If left unchecked the process will run away until the batteries run flat or all the silver is used. The result will be jar of black sludge.

The size of the silver particles in colloidal suspension are determined by the amount of current per silver surface area, so an uncontrolled current source has to be very carefully timed and monitored to produce an acceptable product. The current should ideally be electronically limited to about one milliamp between the electrodes.

Because the water conducts very little current at the start, a voltage of at least thirty volts is needed to get things going, otherwise it seems to take forever to start, three 9 volt batteries in series is the usual recommendation, (but with a current limiter).

If you have to use a home made system, I recommend placing a current limiting resistor of about 10Kohms in series if you are using three 9V batteries. This will give you a fighting chance of limiting the rise in current to produce an acceptable batch of colloidal silver.

If you have a current meter, monitor the current and don't let the current rise above two milliamperes with one milliamp being the ideal .

Some form of stirring is essential to prevent agglomeration of silver particles by dispersing the ions.

Note: If a white mist is observed in the water, you are producing silver chloride. Check the purity of your water and start over.

When the process is finished, which will have taken anywhere from one to two hours for 250 ml of water, decant the top ninety percent into your storage container.

At this point, the product should be clear. Slight coloration (light yellow color) is permissible and results from insufficient agitation causing agglomeration of silver ions into larger particles. If the color is any darker than a faint yellow, it is unsuitable.

It is recommended that the ionic silver be stored in an amber glass container, in any case the container should always be glass and kept in the dark, because the silver ions are very photo sensitive.

Measuring the actual concentration is difficult without laboratory testing. Parts Per Million meters measure dissolved solids, not colloids and are not always an accurate guide.

One milliamp flowing between the electrodes for and hour through 250mL of water will produce a colloidal solution of about 10 parts per million.

If you are in any doubt as to whether it is a colloidal solution or not, shine a laser pointer through the water and compare the beam with plain water to indicate when colloidal silver is present. When shone through a colloidal solution a laser beam is dispersed by the silver ions. This is called “The Tyndall effect.”

Having said all that, the simple solution is to buy a bottle of colloidal silver at your friendly health shop.

If you invest in a colloidal silver machine, the process is simple and controlled, and the end product is cheap and production is reliable.

Using Colloidal Silver as a Medicine.

Anecdotal evidence for the effectiveness of colloidal silver has suggested that it provides a “second” invisible immune system.

Whilst the effectiveness or otherwise of ionic silver for treating disease is a matter of great debate, the responses of thousands of users is overwhelmingly enthusiastic.

The following dose suggestions assume a silver content of around ten parts per million in colloidal suspension.

For Human Consumption, Colloidal silver is administered in three ways :

• It is taken orally in diluted form.
• It is used as a gargle/mouthwash or as drops for the eyes and ears.
• It is used externally as an antiseptic on wounds and for treating skin problems.

Oral Use.

Daily Supplement dose.

Those who use ionic silver as a mineral supplement generally take about one tablespoon of colloidal silver daily ( 15 ml.) in a glass of water first thing in the morning.

Taking colloidal silver in these small amounts on a daily basis is generally felt to be an illness preventative measure with no associated risks from use.

Therapeutic Doses.

Many people use colloidal silver on a need only basis. Generally, 25 - 30 ml is considered one therapeutic dose.

How many doses are taken during a twenty four hour period is quite varied among users, and dependent on the symptoms being treated.

The quantity of doses range from 25 ml to 100ml taken daily. Users that practice multiple doses usually take colloidal silver three to four times daily, feeling that this produces a sustained and cumulative effect throughout the period of use. However, your liver will filter out the silver within about two hours so to maintain a therapeutic dose in your system, frequent small doses are recommended.

Colloidal silver should be held in the mouth at least 30 seconds prior to swallowing. The lining of the mouth is capable of absorbing the silver ions directly and the action of your saliva prepares the ions for transport through your body..

Gargle/Mouthwash.

Gargling with full strength, ie, (5 - 10 PPM), colloidal silver has been found to be extremely effective in the treatment of throat related problems. After gargling hold the colloidal in the mouth for 30 seconds before swallowing.

Using Colloidal silver as a mouthwash has produced dramatic results in the treatment of mouth ulcers, sore and infected gums and other mouth related problems.

Many people use Colloidal silver after brushing their teeth at night to prevent tooth decay overnight.

Simply hold the full strength (5 - 10 PPM) colloidal silver in the mouth for a minute or so before swallowing.

Topical (External) Use.

Colloidal silver is often used externally to address skin conditions and to reduce the spread of bacteria.

Many experienced users believe that the colloidal silver should be applied to the area via a dressing or bandage, and keep the bandage hydrated with colloidal silver.

Contra Indications :

Sometimes a new Colloidal Silver user who ingests Colloidal Silver for the first time will have the experience which is called the Herxheimer effect. They will experience what feels like a cold or the flu (or diarrhea). This can be stopped by cutting back on the dosage (or completely abstaining for a day or so).

This effect can be prevented by starting with a small dose (1/4 to 1 teaspoon twice a day) and gradually increasing the dosage.

Some people even find they need to start off at first with just a few drops.

Continued ingestion of high doses (more than 1 gram of accumulated silver, or 5 mg per day) of colloidal silver may result in Argyria, a permanent discoloration of the skin.

• Add to drinking water when traveling or camping.
• Silver-sprayed burns heal rapidly without scarring.
• Safely sterilize anything from toothbrushes to surgical instruments.
• Use topically on cuts, wounds, abrasions, rashes, sunburn, insect bites and bandages.
• Spray on garbage to prevent decay odors.
• Mist kitchen sponges, towels, cutting boards to eliminate bacteria, to prevent food poisoning, and gastrointestinal contamination.
• Add to juices and milk as a preservative.
• Spray in shoes and between toes to sanitize and treat tinea.
• Dilute with distilled water to use as eye drops to treat eye irritation or infection.
• Use for ear drops for ear infections (warm slightly first).
• Rashes, warts and skin problems, (put on band aid pad and wear on wart overnight each night until gone).
• Use with Q-tips on fingernail, toenail, and ear fungi.
• Can impede tooth decay and bad breath.
• Unlike pharmaceutical antibiotics, Colloidal Silver never permits strain-resistant pathogens to evolve.
• Toothaches, mouth sores, bacterial irritations are diminished.
• Soak dentures.
• Spray refrigerator, freezer and food storage bin interiors.
• Mix in postage stamp, envelope, and tape moistening wells, paint and paste pots to prevent bacterial growth, odors, spoiling or souring.
• Add to water-based paints, wallpaper paste, dishwater, cleaning and mopping solutions, etc.

• Use routinely in laundry final rinse water and always before packing away seasonal clothes.
• Damp clothes or towels and washcloths will not sour or mildew.
• Eliminate unwanted microorganisms in planter soils and hydroponics systems.
• Spray plant foliage to stop fungi, molds, rot, and most plant diseases.
• Silver is an excellent plant-growth stimulator.
• Treat pools, fountains, humidifiers, Jacuzzis, hot tubs, baths, dishwashers, re-circulating cooling tower water, gymnasium foot dips, and bath and shower mats.
• Spray inside shoes, watch bands and gloves and under fingernails periodically.
• Treat shower stalls, tubs, fonts, animal watering troughs, shavers to avoid trading germs.
• Rinse fruit and vegetables before storing or using.
• Put in cooking water.
• Add to human and animal shampoos and they become disinfectants.
• Prevent carpets, drapes and wallpaper from mildewing.
• Wipe telephone mouthpieces, pipe stems, headphones, hearing aids, eyeglass frames, hairbrushes, combs.
Excellent for diapers (nappies) and diaper rash.
• Do toilet seats, bowls, tile floors, sinks, urinals, door knobs.

• Rinse invalid's pillowcases, sheets, towels and bedclothes.
